This year, Gramado continues to invest in the various possibilities of Brazilian audiovisual. In its 52nd edition, the event will show the first episode of the series Cidade de Deus: A Luta Não Para, in an hors concours manner.
Produced by O2 Filmes, the new HBO Original series is an adapted continuation of Paulo Lins’ literary work, and portrays the story of its characters using Buscapé’s photographic work as a starting point. The plot takes place in the early 2000s and features excerpts from the film in flashbacks, to reconstruct memories and affective memories of the protagonists.
The cast features the return of names such as Alexandre Rodrigues, Thiago Martins, Roberta Rodrigues, Sabrina Rosa, Kiko Marques and Edson Oliveira. New actors join the plot, such as Andréia Horta, Marcos Palmeira, Jefferson Brasil, Eli Ferreira, Luellem de Castro, Otávio Linhares, Rafael Lozano, Leandro Daniel and Luiz Bertazzo. Aly Muritiba signs the general direction and Bruno Costa joins as second director. The script is by Sérgio Machado, Renata Di Carmo, Armando Praça, Estevão Ribeiro, Rodrigo Felha and Muritiba.
For Marcos Santuario, the special session demonstrates the strength of Gramado. “Last year we had the world premiere of Cangaço Novo, from Prime Video, one of the most successful series in 2023 and which has already announced its second season. This year, together with HBO, we will show another Brazilian series, a continuation of one of the most emblematic national films of all time. This reinforces Gramado as a release window for series as well.”
Cidade de Deus: A Luta Não Para will be shown in a special session, out of competition, on Saturday, August 10th, at the Palácio dos Festivals. The production premieres in August on the Max streaming platform and the HBO channel.
